Discs-n-Dabs® 2022 – The Recap

This past Labor Day Weekend marked the 6th Annual Discs-n-Dabs Campout & Tournament (and the 9th Discs-n-Dabs event)!

We had 35 teams checked-in and competing in this year’s tournament in Trinidad, CO at Twisted Cedars Disc Golf Course. The course owners graciously allowed our teams to camp, play, and take copious amounts of dabs (1260 minimum during the rounds alone!) while enjoying their property, including a layout designed specifically for the tournament.

In addition to countless dabs and a healthy serving of smiles, this year’s Discs-n-Dabs broke our raffle record, raising $2400 for our nonprofit partner Wilderness on Wheels.

While the event officially kicked off Friday, Sponsors and VIP+ teams were given the option of early entry on Thursday, which many took advantage of.

By checking in early, teams had an easier time setting up camp (both for tents and RVs), as well as the option of additional time on the course for practice rounds, and getting to bypass the main check-in period on Friday.

Friday’s Check-In kicked off the weekend with teams showing up to sign waivers, grab player packs, and head up to claim their campsites.

Twisted Cedars’ layout allowed for VIP and VIP+ camping that was out of the way of fairways and tee pads, making for clearer play and allowing practice rounds to take place while campers set up their sites.

This was also the first year that come-and-go was allowed, and all teams were advised on Discs-n-Dabs Safe Driving Initiative upon check-in.

Many teams took advantage of this perk, whether they were camping or not, to run to town for last minute items like ice, sunscreen, and bug repellent.

By Saturday morning, everyone was onsite and ready to play.

Sponsors began setting up dab stations and vending areas, and the morning kicked off with Cannabis Yoga, led by Heather Mitchell.

Shortly thereafter, our players’ meeting kicked off rounds, matchmaking card mates and reviewing the rules of the event:

One Dab Per Team Per Hole. No Exceptions.

Players soon hit the course after getting into the Ace Pot and ensuring they had all of the water, weed, and snacks to get them through their rounds.

Following Round 1, Random Temple kicked off our live music with a surprise DJ set, followed by a 2-hour performance serenading teams as they made their way down the mountain.

After Random Temple, we welcomed Tonewood Stringband to the Discs-n-Dabs stage for some psychedelic bluegrass before most teams turned in for the night, exhausted from a day of disc golf and dabs. We also lit up a quarter-pound joint that went around the crowd for the entirety of Tonewood’s set!

Sunday morning kicked off in a similar fashion, with morning yoga and a brief players meeting before Round 2 kicked off.

Teams that were awake, ready, and already had card mates were allowed to hit the course early if they desired, which many took advantage of to beat afternoon winds and temperatures. While we were lucky to have moderate weather in the 80s for this time of year, we were treated to wind gusts, surprise rainstorms, and direct sunlight, all of which can impact rounds.

As rounds came to a close and score cards began coming in, Ducky took to the stage, recruiting Adrian from Tonewood Stringband for a few songs and kicking off the evening’s festivities.

This year, we were lucky enough to have multiple artists who knew each other outside of our event, which made for some fun commentary, and surprise performances.

Following Ducky’s set, everyone gathered for our Family Photo before we dove in to the charity raffle and awards.

As mentioned, we raised $2400 (including the ace pot) for Wilderness on Wheels thanks to all of the sponsors who donated items, and the attendees who bought tickets.

For those still awake and ready to party, many teams headed up the mountain for a light show going on in the VIP camp as well as a late night LED bocce ball outing.

Monday morning brought with it the end of the event, but campers were in good spirits as they packed up and headed home.

Many of you also packed out trash (even though we had a dumpster) and went the extra mile to pick up roaches, cigarette butts, and leftover items that neighboring teams and camps had forgotten, and we cannot thank you enough for taking the time to do so.

Speaking of Thank You’s, we could not do this without you. Yes, YOU.

Thank you to our attendees for showing up with smiles, ready to make fond memories with new and old friends.

Thank you to our sponsors for supporting events like this and normalizing outdoor cannabis athletics, and participating in all of the fun.

Thank you to our volunteers, both official volunteers/staff as well as those of you who regularly offer to help out in any way you can; your help and your good intentions are truly appreciated.

Thank you to our artists for making the trek out from your home bases to brave dirt roads and the elements to bring our attendees a soundtrack to finish their days with.

Thank you to my fiancé and co-host Jordan for helping me stay organized and high enough to give you all the experience you deserve.

And, most of all, thank you to Johnny and Laura Okun for welcoming us onto your beautiful property in southern Colorado for a weekend of disc golf, dabs, camping, and memories.

Without all of you, none of this would be possible.

Thank you for taking care of the property, for honoring the spirit of the sport, and for helping each other get through the rounds (both through instruction, hydration, and consumption).

Stay tuned for details next year, what we can tell you is:

  • Mitten Edition 2.0 will be back in Michigan for the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend 2023
  • 7th Annual Discs-n-Dabs will take place over Labor Day Weekend 2023

More information will be announced closer to the new year, though we might give former attendees advance notice.

Thank you all and see you next year!

Ben
