I cannot tell you how excited I was to find a location for Discs-n-Dabs events that was within an hour of Denver and Boulder, even before I’d ever played it. Having the option of nearby courses for single day and special events makes it much easier for people to commit to coming out and playing in the tournaments. Yesterday, I had the chance to play WonderVu Disc Golf Course for the first time, and I’m stoked to say that the course not only lives up to expectations, but is incredibly friendly to the outdoorsy cannabis consumer, and is a perfect course to enjoy dabs and disc golf on the last Saturday in September.
WonderVu has an excellent location that is within 30 minutes of Louisville and Broomfield, and less than an hour from Boulder and Denver. Once you get on Coal Creek Canyon Rd., it’s about 10 miles of cruising through the hills of Colorado before you end up turning onto Camp Eden Rd. where the course is the first right (look for a big blue and white school bus, and a old disc nailed to a tree). There’s a gas station or two and a liquor store/grocery store/everything-you’d-need-store along the route, but plan ahead if you’re looking for cannabis, as there isn’t a dispensary on the way.
Once you get there, there’s parking sporadically throughout the driveway of the property and in an ancillary lot just off the course. Parking will be tight for the tournament, and we recommend carpooling if possible to avoid overcrowding. We were lucky enough to find a spot on property, and walked down to the Pro Shop to meet the course staff and chat about the event while we waited for our fourth player.
Once we had everyone, we headed out to tee #1 around noon. We finished the round by 3:30pm(ish), so plan on a solid 1.5-2 hours per 9-hole round, especially if you’re taking safety meeting breaks. Each hole offers a unique challenge, with a few that you throw straight downhill, a few that you throw blindly, and one giant tunnel of trees that makes for a crazy par 4.
Each of the holes has a bench or a stool at the very least, some have couches and tables and “Smoking Sections.” Almost every hole has garbage, recycling and dog poop bins as well. Please be mindful of these when using the course (both before, during and after the event) as it helps keep it in nice condition for other players.
As someone who is by no means pro, but can generally shoot around Par, I shot a +16 for the day. Our best scorer was a +7, and that’s someone who regularly birdies around half the course. This course is challenging, fun, and remote enough to avoid issues with neighbors, which makes for a great cannabis and disc golf tournament spot.
If you want to play the course before the tournament, head on down to Wondervu Disc Golf Course at 136 Camp Eden Rd, Golden, CO 80403. The fee to play is ~$5 normally per person. They have a lot in the works over at WonderVu, and I can’t wait to see everyone for the Fall Classic on September 29th. Team invites are going fast, but you can still sign up.
If you’ve ever heard of, seen a recap video of, or attended Discs-n-Dabs, then you know the Fall Classic is going to be a fun way to finish out the summer and welcome fall. See you soon!
